“Hello lovely people! Welcome to New York! I’m Lorna Pond and I will be your tour guide for the day! Just kidding, I’m ridiculously bad at giving tours! I always get lost and then people get mad at me. Anyway, what can I help you with?”

He furrowed his brow. “No, why would it?” He looked around. “So, you know me, but I don’t know you. Would you like to step inside the TARDIS and educate me?”

Lorna chuckled. “Sure Doc if that’s what you want! I’ve only been on the TARDIS a couple of times! Totally not fair considering how much my sister’s been in here…and my parents…though that’s probably a spoiler isn’t it…whoops! Anyway, let’s get this show on the road,” she exclaimed, stepping into the TARDIS. “Ask away!”

Martha raised her eyebrows and smirked. “Raggedy Man, is that what he goes by nowadays? Oh boy.” She laughed, the became serious. Brother in law. Married. He was married. “Are you… Are you Rose Tyler’s sister?” The only person Martha could think of who the Doctor would marry was Rose Tyler. The way he went on and on about her when they’d been travelling together, it had made Martha practically vomit. It didn’t seem to Martha that he was capable of moving on. It had been why she left.

“Oh, no I’m uh…right I forgot, none of you have met my sister. Her name’s River, River Song. Well her REAL name is Melody Pond but she doesn’t go by that anymore. It’s a really long story and I think she’d probably kill me if I told you. I mean, she killed her own husband for Pete’s sakes! Well…she didn’t really kill him she just pretended to kill him so the Universe didn’t blow up…it’s a long story…but…yeah! Raggedy Man! He’s in a different regeneration now from the one you knew, but he’s still the silly old Doctor! Sorry…I tend to get overexcited. Mels always hates family gatherings because both the Doctor and I talk a lot. Sorry…are you…are you okay?”

Lorna eyes lit up and she did a little twirl before hugging her father excitedly. “Really?! Like…really really?! You’d actually let me?! Oh Dad that would be so much fun! You’re the best! Can we go now? Pretty please? I promise I won’t get in the way!”

Rory, slightly surprised, did an awkward grin as he hugged her back. “I don’t see why you can’t, probably. And we can, I’m due in, in twenty minutes anyway.”

“Oh that sounds so fun! Okay, so fill me in! What do I need to do? Do I need to go home and get anything? I’m totally ready for this,” she said, grinning excitedly. “What do I do Daddy-o?”

He gives her a puzzled look and slowly shakes his head. “I’m sorry, I can’t say that I do.” he frowns. “Should I?” Feeling terrible, he glances away.

“Oh well uh…you know. I suppose not? Spoilers and all that. I um…I’m not really quite used to this time travel thing. Guess I arrived too early.” She sighed. “That’s the last time I steal Mels’s vortex manipulator and try to use it without her. Lesson learned I suppose. I um…it’s nice to see you. I’m Lorna, by the way, Lorna Pond. Dunno if I mentioned that…”

His brow shot up at that. “Family?” He looked at her curiously. “This is my tenth body. Which one do you know?” He was instantly easily ten times more interested in who this woman was.

“Oh uh…I know the next one. Eleventh. Pretty cool. You’re more of a um…pretty boy in this regeneration though. With the spiky hair and the suit and the…not giraffe-like limbs.” She patted the top of his hair curiously before shrugging. “Anyway uh…just…ignore the whole family thing yeah? I thought you might have just not met me yet or something. I didn’t…I uh…I’m not as good at keeping secrets as my sister is. It’s nice to meet you though…or have you meet me.”

“Pretty boy…” he ran his fingers through his hair and fluffed it a bit. He pouted, “So you’re telling me I’m clumsy in my next regeneration?” He sighed and shook his head. “How long do I have, so I can prepare to mourn this body.” He was only half joking. This really was one of his favorite forms, with the other being his fifth. ‘Maybe it’s just multiples of five…’ he mused to himself. ‘bummer if that’s the case…’

Lorna shrugged. “I dunno.I don’t know that much about your timeline. I mean…I know a few stories, but they’re mostly from my parents who met you in the eleventh form. Although…my sister might have met you in this one. Do uh…do you know anyone named River Song?”

He stiffened at the name, remembering exactly how he knew River. “Yes, we’ve met. How is she? She’s your sister, you said?”

“She’s okay. At least as far as I know. You’d know better than I would. Well…future you, not this you obviously. She doesn’t really come home a lot. But yes, she’s my sister. We’ve got the same parents and stuff. Why…does that surprise you?”

“Ooh another stranger,” Lorna exclaimed, running up to the unfamiliar woman with a grin, “how exciting! Hi there! I’m Lorna Pond! Pleasure to meet ya! Who might you be?”

image

“Martha Jones.” Concerned, she asked, “Can I help you with anything, I was just heading home from the hospital, and I’d very much like to get home. Unless there’s an emergency.”

image

Lorna arched her eyebrows. “Martha Jones? Really? As in…the woman who saved the world Martha Jones?! You’re awesome! I can’t believe it! this is so cool! It’s really, really nice to meet you! I um…oh…sorry…you said you were in a hurry. I just…I heard a lot about that year you know…with the Master and everything…and how awesome you were. I just…I kinda feel like I’m meeting a superhero! But even superheroes have to get home and rest, yeah? How far away is it? Do you want help carrying anything?”

image

Martha was a little stunned. She hadn’t expected to run into someone who knew her, let alone for the Year that Never Was. “Um, yeah, sure, if you wouldn’t mind,” she responded, handing her a bag of groceries she’d had tucked under an arm. “And trust me, I’m not a superhero. Far from it, I just travelled with the Doctor, he can make anyone seem like a superhero.” She sighed, giving this stranger a sad smile as she led her towards her flat. “So what’s your name then?”

Lorna took the bag of groceries and began to walk alongside Martha. “Who me? Oh I’m Lorna. Lorna Pond. No one special really. And the Doctor doesn’t make everyone special. He didn’t make me special, or my parents. Honestly you should see the two of them now. Companions for ten years and then poof! One touch of an angel and they’re the most boring people in Manhattan! Sorry I’m rambling. But anyway, point being…I still think you’re awesome and amazing. Hope you’re okay with that.”

“No, there’s no way that your parents could travel with the Doctor 10 years and be completely dull. It’s not possible. Whatever you say, though. Maybe because they’re your parents you find them boring.” Martha didn’t know how to respond to being amazing. Should she thank her? “Thank you. I don’t usually meet people who know about the Year that Never Was, so this is a first. Do you travel with the Doctor? Is that how you know about me?”

“Oh they chose the boring life, trust me,” Lorna said with a laugh. “It was either the Doctor or each other, so they chose each other. Blah blah blah lots of romantic stuff. Anyway, I’ve been on a couple trips with the Raggedy Man, but nothing too substantial. I’m not a companion or anything. Mostly I just know him cause he’s my brother in law. He’s sort of obligated to come spend at least one holiday a year with us!” She laughed. “My sister’d kill him if he didn’t!”

“Seriously?” James muttered to himself as a lizard-like creature suddenly turned a corner, and out of James’ sight. He’d been chasing the thing for half an hour now to no avail and he was slowly starting to want to give up. He sped up again turned around the corner at such a fast pace he collided straight into someone. “Oh sorry…” He drifted off as he caught sight of the lizard turned a corner once more. “Great.” he muttered to himself as he turned his attention to the person once more. “Sorry… I wasn’t looking where I was going.”

Lorna jumped slightly when someone bumped into her. “I…oh! Sorry! No it’s no problem! I bumped into people all the time! I uh…are you all right? You seem kind of…frustrated. I’m Lorna, by the way, Lorna Pond.”

River smirked shyly. “Oh shush, I’m hardly perfect.” She mumbled a small blush coming onto her cheeks.

“Please…Mels…have you SEEN yourself? Brilliant, beautiful, successful, and now a great Mum. Seriously, I feel like I’m hiking Mt. Everest here. Just one thing wrong that’s all I’m asking for,” she said with a small laugh. “Just one? I mean…I screw up all the time! Seriously, it’s not that hard!” She then descended into a brief silence and looked down at her hands with a sighed. “I just…it’s really hard for me to figure out what to do with my life when I’m being compared to you all the time, you know? I mean…they say they don’t compare us and I know they don’t mean to but I mean…come on. You’ve saved the world how many times? I can’t even cook breakfast properly.” She shook her head and wiped her tears away quickly. “Sorry…sorry. I don’t mean to get all weird and emotional it’s just babies…and feelings…and yeah. Anyway! Enough of all that! Is she hungry? Does she need anything? I can help if you need it!”

River stood stunned her smile gone when she heard Lorna’s confession and gently she took Andromeda placing the girl back in her cot before kneeling next to Lorna. Gently she lifted her head up using the pad of her thumb to wipe away any of her tears.
“I don’t have a job Lorna. I was fired when they found out I was pregnant. My husband, although I understand why, struggles to find me at the right time and place. I can’t sleep without a light on or the sound of rain and I am constantly afraid. Afraid of losing her. Losing you. Losing Mum or Dad. Losing the Doctor… And the only thing I can cook very well is Fish Custard.” She added with a gentle smirk. “You are caring Lorna, and loving and so very compassionate. You’re perfect to me.”

Lorna looked at her sister, stunned for a moment, before shaking her head lightly. “But they…how could they fire you?! That…they’re stupid!” She sighed before taking River’s hand in her own and smiling softly. “And you’re not going to lose me. I’ve told you before…well will tell you for you I guess…but I’m your baby sister. You couldn’t get rid of me if you tried. And…thank you Mels. I…I think I really needed to hear that. Mum and Dad…I know they’re just worried but they’ve been really tough on me lately and I…I just needed someone to telling me I’m not failing everyone I love, so thank you.”

River chuckled softly. “They could fire me because I had already died working for Lux and they couldn’t be bothered paying for maternity leave.” She explained quietly. “I’ve only just found you I would hope I’ll not be losing you any time soon… To Mum and Dad, I can only assume you are a blessing to them, a blessing they don’t want to lose. You could never fail them though. I promise you that.” She said.

“Oh so this is…you’ve already…okay.” She nodded quickly, not particularly wanting to talk about her sister dying. “I wouldn’t…i wouldn’t say I’m a blessing to Mum and Dad. A distraction maybe. A constant source of frustration, definitely but not…not a blessing. I dunno I just…ugh. Being a teenager sucks you know that?”
